Match.com Celebrates Anniversary

Launched in April 1995, Match.com is celebrating its 15 year anniversary this year. Match.com has helped millions of members connect online and meet offline. As many as 12 of those connections result in engagement or marriage each and every day. Match.com is celebrated as the first site successful in bringing online dating into the mainstream dating scene.

About Online Dating

According to Online Dating Magazine, more than 20 million people visit an online dating site each month. Singles who are tired of the typical bar scene or those who may be too shy to approach a potential date have been signing up to meet other singles through online dating sites like Match.com for over a decade.

Members complete a profile that provides prospective connections important information including: age, education, job status, diet, children, interest, pets and much, much more. These profiles provide a way to “pre-screen” connections. Members contact other members who they feel they might have a connection with. The two then communicate to create buds that often result in an offline meeting and then into a real relationship.

One of the reasons online dating has increased in popularity is the potential to meet a larger group of people than one would be able to meet in everyday life. A survey conducted by Match.com found that couples who meet online tend to marriage quicker than their offline counterparts. Couples matched online are often more confident in their marriages and know they are in love earlier. These couples have the advantage of knowing the basics about each other and then building the cornerstones of their relationship without all the customary awkwardness of a typical first date.

About Online Initiated Marriages

Depending on whom you ask you will find that anywhere from 7% to 17% of marriages are initiated through online dating sites. While this method may not be the majority, it is certainly increasing in popularity. However, just like meeting anyone offline first, an online relationship is not guaranteed to last to happily ever after.
